LICENCE PLATES OF AFGHANISTAN (2024)

Afghanistan’s license plates have undergone several changes since their introduction in 1970. The current design was implemented in 2004. The license plates measures 420 x 175 mm and feature a white background with black text and numbers. The licence plate is divided in 3 sections, written in western and persian characters. LEFT: The provincial code and a design of Kabul’s royal palace. CENTER: An alfanumeric code, that depending on the region, showcases 3 to 5 numbers, except Kabul, that has 6 (As they arrived to 99999) and it is displayed with two dashes, on top and bottom of the number written in persian and latin characters. RIGHT: type of vehicle and a security hologram of the traffic authority.

BUS

The bus license plate has black characters over a yellow background, displaying both Pashto and latin scripts. The letter that identifies buses is “B” or “ب”.

DIPLOMATIC

Diplomatic license plates feature a red background with white characters in both Pashto and latin scripts. The number format is unique, consisting of two numbers, a dash, and two more numbers (e.g., 23-45). The letters “CD” (Corps Diplomatique) are also prominently displayed, signifying the diplomatic status of the vehicle.

GOVERNMENT

 

Governmental license plates in Afghanistan feature a black background with white characters in both Pashto and latin scripts. Unlike other vehicle types, they do not display a specific code but instead feature a dash in its place.

TRUCK

Trucks display a white licence plate with black characters, the print that diferenciates trucks is “L” (Stands for Lorry) or “ل”.

MOTORCYCLE

Motorcycle license plates are smaller in size compared to other vehicles. They feature a unique identifier, the letter “M” (or its Pashto equivalent “م”), to distinguish them.

RICKSHAW

The rickshaw displays a white licence plate with black characters followed by the letters “TRC”/”ر

TAXI

The taxis display a orange licence plate with black characters followed by the letters “T”/”ت

TEMPORARY

Temporary license plates are easily recognizable due to their orange background and black characters. They are marked with the word “TEMP” (or its Pashto equivalent “پروان”) to differentiate them from other license plates.

UNITED NATIONS

UN license plates feature a blue background with black characters. They do not display any specific letters to identify the vehicle type
